Francés

Durante el período colonial francés (1858-1954), Vietnam estuvo bajo el dominio de Francia. El francés se convirtió en el idioma administrativo y educativo del país durante este tiempo. Aunque Vietnam obtuvo la independencia en 1954, el francés continuó siendo utilizado por algunas generaciones debido a su legado colonial.

Ruso

Durante la Guerra de Vietnam (1955-1975), la Unión Soviética apoyó al gobierno de Vietnam del Norte. Esto llevó a la enseñanza generalizada del ruso en instituciones educativas y su uso en sectores como la educación superior, la ciencia y la administración pública. Muchos vietnamitas de esa época aprendieron ruso y lo han conservado hasta hoy.

Inglés

Aunque el inglés es más predominante como segunda lengua en Vietnam en la actualidad, especialmente entre las generaciones más jóvenes y en el ámbito turístico y comercial, el francés y el ruso aún son hablados por personas mayores que vivieron durante períodos históricos de influencia extranjera significativa en el país.
